Back to article overview

This BAT study focuses on the prevention and reduction of plastic granule loss at the company level. It covers all forms of plastic granules (plastic pellets, flakes, powder, and fluff) and all companies involved in activities with plastic granules. In the identification and selection of BAT, measures are divided into preventive measures, containment measures (including water treatment techniques), and cleanup techniques. Based on the principle of pollution prevention, priority is given to preventive measures.

Consequently, the recommendations on environmental conditions propose the inclusion of a risk assessment plan, to be prepared by the operator. This plan should take into account the type and properties of the plastic granules, the nature and size of the installation, as well as the scale of operations. It should map out risk areas for plastic granule spills and losses and include measures to minimize them.

Finally, the study formulates recommendations for further research to address several gaps in available knowledge and information. Examples include the efficiency of measures to prevent or reduce plastic granule loss, the removal efficiency of water treatment techniques for plastic granules, the development of a standardized measurement method for plastic granules in water, and the dispersal characteristics of different types of plastic granules.
