Back to article overview

This preliminary study examined to what extent a partial revision of the existing BAT study is warranted, with attention to the full trajectory of prevention, management and treatment of water streams within healthcare institutions. The study addresses developments and relevant technical advances in water management, including the control of micropollutants and pharmaceutical residues, the management of chemically contaminated substreams, sustainable and circular water use, and monitoring, digitalisation and control. In addition, the study pays attention to an integrated approach to water streams within healthcare institutions, taking into account policy, legal and technical developments at Flemish and European level. The results of the preliminary study provide an important basis for further policy considerations and possible follow-up initiatives regarding sustainable and future-oriented water management in the healthcare sector.
