A new study funded by the EU explores policy options for increasing the deployment of renewable energy in Europe between now and 2030. The study addresses ways of generating long term funding for renewable projects across all sectors. It examines options for increasing the use of renewable energy in the transport sector and in the heating and cooling sector, in particular through obligations for suppliers. These would include requiring them to obtain a certain proportion of the energy they provide from renewable sources.
The study investigates measures aimed at ensuring more European citizens participate in the transition to clean energy, especially through the development of renewable energy communities. In these communities, people generate and consume renewable energy for themselves. The study also considers options for increasing regional cooperation between EU countries in the area of renewable energy. It also proposes other actions to ensure that the EU reaches its overall target of at least 27% renewable energy by 2030.
