A new European Environment Agency (EEA) report argues that implementing these two concepts in tandem, by applying specific design principles within a systemic approach, would improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental pressures.

After breaching their national air pollution limits, eleven governments have asked the European Commission to retrospectively raise their ‘emission ceilings’. Green groups have warned that the governments of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain and the United Kingdom are attempting to use a legal loophole to hide their failure to cut harmful air pollution.

De regeringsleiders van de 28 lidstaten verzamelen in Brussel voor een beslissende vergadering omtrent het toekomstige Europese energie- en klimaatbeleid. Op tafel liggen Europese doelstellingen voor CO2-reductie, energie-efficiëntie en hernieuwbare energie. Terechte bekommernissen, maar in de uitwerking van de plannen vraagt essenscia om rekening te houden met het globale karakter van de economie én van de klimaatproblematiek.

Drie jaar na de laatste Eurobarometer-enquête over dit onderwerp is duidelijk dat ondanks de economische crisis de bezorgdheid van de Europeanen over het milieu niet is afgenomen. De 28 000 ondervraagde burgers blijken vrijwel unaniem (95 %) de bescherming van het milieu voor hen persoonlijk belangrijk te vinden en velen denken dat er meer kan worden gedaan.

In the first six months of 2014, Europe fully grid connected 224 offshore wind turbines in 16 commercial wind farms and one offshore demonstration site with a combined capacity totalling 781 MW. There are 310 wind turbines awaiting grid connection. Once connected, these will add a total capacity of over 1,200 MW. The total capacity of all the wind farms under construction is over 4,900 MW when fully commissioned.

According to a new survey, most European citizens think their own country is generating too much waste. The survey on the "Attitudes of Europeans towards Waste Management and Resource Efficiency" indicates that 96 % of respondents say it is important for them that Europe uses its resources more efficiently: 68 % say this is very important for them, and just 3 % of respondents say this issue is not important.
